Syngap+/- CA1 pyramidal neurons exhibit upregulated translation of long mRNAs associated with LTP.

SYNGAP1 haploinsufficiency syndrome is a serious neurodevelopmental disorder associated with intellectual disability and autism. Singh*, Rizzi* et al. investigate how changes in protein synthesis in Syngap+/- mouse model neurons drive changes in synaptic function in the hippocampus, an area important for learning. The results reveal increased translation of mRNAs involved in long-term synaptic potentiation (LTP) of synaptic strength, which are particularly long in length. These results suggest mRNA translation changes contribute to the persistent synaptic strengthening seen in Syngap+/- neurons.
